CISA ensures to provide quality services to our Members, Volunteers, Stakeholders and especially international students. The policy sets out duties with respect to the management of your personal Information.
We are compliant with the State of Victoria’s Information Privacy Act (2000), Schedule 1 of the Privacy Amendment (Enhancing Privacy Protection) Act 2012, which amends the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). The Policy sets out how we collect, secure, use, disclose and dispose your personal information.
A copy of the Australian Privacy Principles may be obtained from the website of The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at www.oaic.gov.au When we collect Personal Information from you or about you, we will, where appropriate and where possible, explain to you why we are collecting the information and how we plan to use it.
We will make every reasonable effort to keep any personal information we collect from you, secure ad when the purpose for which we collected your Personal Information has expired we will make every reasonable effort to dispose of your Personal Information in a secure manner.
What is Personal Data (Information) and why do we collect it? Personal Information is ‘Information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable: a) whether the information or opinion is true or not; and b) whether the information or opinion is recorded in a material form or not’
Personal information may include: • ‘Sensitive information’ (includes information or opinion about an individual’s racial or ethnic origin, political opinion, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or criminal record, provided the information or opinion otherwise meets the definition of personal information) • ‘Health information’ (which is also ‘sensitive information’) • ‘Credit information’ • ‘Employee record’ information (subject to exemptions) and • ‘Tax file number information’ • General information as would be required to receive information e.g. email address, telephone number etc. The Personal Information we collect includes names, addresses, email addresses, phone and any supporting personal information that you would give us to advocate on your behalf.
This Personal Information is obtained in many ways including correspondence by telephone, by email, via our website www.cisa.edu.au, from media and publications, from other publicly available sources and from third parties. We collect your Personal Information for the primary purpose of advocating for and supporting international student rights. We may also use your Personal Information for a secondary purpose in circumstances where you would reasonably expect such use or disclosure when requesting us to advocate on your behalf. If we are going to use your information for a purpose, in addition to the purpose for which we have already gained your consent, we will make every reasonable effort to contact you to discuss this with you. If you do not wish to receive information about our advocacy services, please contact the National Secretary in writing to inform us of your decision about receiving information from us.
Sensitive Information The security of Sensitive Personal information is very important to us. Sensitive Personal Information includes information or opinion about such things as an individual's racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, membership of a political association, religious or philosophical beliefs, membership of a trade union or other professional body, criminal record or health information. Sensitive Personal Information will only be used by CISA for the betterment of an international student and in an anonymous/de-identified manner for the betterment of all International Students in Australia. We will only use ‘sensitive personal information’ for: • The primary purpose for which it was obtained • A secondary purpose that is directly related to the primary purpose • With your consent; or where required or authorised by law Third Parties Where reasonable and practicable to do so, we will collect your Personal Information directly from you. However, in some circumstances we may be provided with information by third parties. In such a case we will take reasonable steps to ensure that you are made aware of the information provided to us by the third party and, we will ensure that this information is treated with the same respect and security as information we collect directly from you.
Disclosure of Personal Information Your Personal Information may be disclosed in several circumstances including the following: • Third parties where you consent to the use or disclosure; and • Where required or authorised by law. Your Personal Information is stored in a manner that reasonably protects it from misuse and loss and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. When your Personal Information is no longer needed for the purpose for which it was obtained, we will take reasonable steps to destroy or permanently de-identify your Personal Information. Personal Information you supply to us is stored in an encrypted electronic file which is accessible using a secure password.
Access to your Personal Information Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to access the Personal Information we hold about you to update and/or correct it. If you wish to access your Personal Information, please contact the National Secretary in writing.
